Short sleeve, long sleeve, and staying compliant in the heat
Short sleeve (S/S) is the summer default — maximum airflow, and on most sites it pairs with a vest or stands alone where your safety plan allows a rated shirt. Long sleeve (L/S) buys you sun coverage, cooler-morning comfort, and extra visible material — several long-sleeve styles here are how crews step up visibility without adding a layer.
Fabric is the real decision. Cotton comfort shirts feel like a normal tee and wear well for general site work. Moisture-wicking and mesh-insert shirts are for heat — they move sweat and air, and on a paving crew in August that’s the difference between compliant all shift and a shirt hanging on the mirror by lunch. Segmented tape is worth the small step up if you wash your gear constantly: it flexes with the fabric and survives laundering better than solid tape.
Class 3 in a t-shirt? Yes — the mesh-insert Class 3 tee gives you vest-level classification in a single garment. It’s the simplest compliant setup for hot work where a vest over a shirt is one layer too many.
Care note: wash inside out, skip the fabric softener (it coats reflective tape), and retire the shirt when the color goes flat. A faded tee fails the same way a faded vest does.
Questions, answered
Can a hi-vis t-shirt replace a safety vest?If the shirt itself is ANSI-rated to the class your job requires — yes, many are. An unrated t-shirt under an unrated vest does not. Check the certification on each product page, and check your site safety plan.
What’s the best hi-vis shirt for summer? The lightest breathable or mesh-insert style you can get away with for your class requirement. Lightweight and DX4 shirts are built for heat; cotton comfort is better when your work is less physical or the weather is mixed.
Short sleeve or long sleeve?Short sleeve for maximum cooling. Long sleeve for sun protection, cooler weather, and extra visibility — and it’s required on some sites for arm coverage.
